Message from the MDA President February 2018
Dear Esteemed MDA Members,
Greetings from the Council of the Malaysian Dental Association (MDA). Though belated, allow me to take this opportunity to wish everyone a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year 2018.
25th MDA Scientific Convention and Trade Exhibition ( SCATE 2018)
The MDA kick started the new financial year with a big bang by way of the recently concluded 25th MDA Scientific Convention and Trade Exhibition (SCATE 2018) held from 26-28 January 2018 at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur. The annual congress was well attended with participation of close to 2000 people from our own country and from abroad.
One of the objectives of MDA is to disseminate advanced and updated knowledge to all delegates attending conferences. This conference has brought about a gathering of diversities comprising both foreign and local specialists. On this note, I record my gratitude to the committed and dedicated organizing committee – led by Professor Ngeow Wei Cheong, which has demonstrated and proven their unchallengeable capabilities and forward looking leadership to put into place a congress of this magnitude.
I also wish to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to our distinguished guest speakers who selflessly shared their knowledge and insight with us, a truly altruistic act for the betterment of our beloved profession. Not forgetting my heartfelt appreciation to our trade partners in the dental industries, who have been important partners in all events organised by the MDA. Their generous support as well as close collaboration with the MDA are deeply appreciated.
While our focus is on dental innovation, we recognize that oral health is an integral part of overall general health. I am pleased that through the quality presentations covering all disciplines of dentistry in the congress, the impact of oral health as part of general health was highlighted and well addressed.
25th MDA Scientific Convention and Trade Exhibition ( SCATE 2018)
On behalf of the Malaysian Dental Association (MDA), I am honoured and delighted to extend our warmest and most sincere welcome to all honourable guests and friends to the Malaysian International Dental Exhibition & Convention (MIDEC 2018), to be held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Kuala Lumpur, 20-22 July 2018.
This not to be missed convention has been rebranded for the fifth year. Building upon the valuable experiences gained, the MIDEC 2018 with the aptly chosen theme " Tomorrow's Dentistry Today", remains an exceptional platform to exchange dialogue, to connect and rekindle, to share ideas and insights with a host of local and international top notch renowned speakers. International conferences such as this are extremely important for the profession to deliberate on the latest innovations and technologies in the delivery of quality oral healthcare.
Driven by our commitment in Continuing Professional Development (CPD), the organizing committee has also taken great measures to ensure the diversity of meaningful and relevant topics. MIDEC 2018 offers a unique opportunity in hosting top notch international speakers as well as proven local ones to make known the advancements in dentistry, benefiting not only Malaysians but also our delegates from abroad.
With all the changes occurring in dentistry, as well as in the larger healthcare arena, we must remain strong in defending our professionalism, dignity and integrity. In the euphoria of growing another profitable economic sector, we must not forget and cannot abandon the objectives of our career choice as we continue to face changing disease patterns, aging populations, escalating costs and need to improve access to quality care to all.
As provision of quality dental care to the public has emerged as one of the highest objectives for dental professionals, we are duty bound to update and upgrade ourselves for continued professional development, so that we will be able to provide optimum quality and safe care to our patients. The MDA being a passionate advocate of organized dentistry, is honoured to provide a vibrant platform for our members as well as our colleagues abroad to share knowledge and to explore the potential of new advances in dental sciences.
CSR Project on Illegal Dentistry
The MDA Council has been following closely all the events and news related to the issue of “quack dentists”, practising “fake dentistry” on Malaysian citizens.
The dental profession as a whole is saddened by the apparent lack of awareness on the part of the general public regarding the seriousness of this matter, with some still resorting to seeking dental care from these unregistered (illegal) practitioners. The council views this matter with utmost seriousness and is obliged to continuously enlighten the general public in line with the objectives of the association to promote the arts and science of Dentistry for the benefit of the public.
In collaboration with the relevant stakeholders, we are in the process of heightening public awareness through direct public engagement to educate the public on the issue of Fake Dentistry. To kick start this process, plans were afoot for a community social responsibility project pertaining to this subject and the general public were invited to attend the public talk held in conjunction with the 25th MDA SCIENTIFIC CONVENTION AND TRADE EXHIBITION.

Dental Bill 2017
The long overdue and much awaited Dental Bill 2017 which was finally read for the first time in Parliament on 28 November 2017, was deferred to the next Parliament session for the 2nd reading on 30 November 2017. The news took all concerned dental practitioners in Malaysia by surprise. Though the MDA council are very concerned, we remain confident that the authorities concerned will duly sort out any issues involved in due time.
In alignment with the vision and mission of the MDA to promote the art and science of Dentistry for the benefit of the public as well as to provide safe, holistic, and affordable oral healthcare services, the MDA Council has been actively involved in some significant advocacy campaigns that have made the mark on the dental landscape. The MDA past Presidents and their councils have played a vital role in the drafting of the bill since its inception, with the broad principle that while a fair bill gives due recognition to all specialists, the scope of practice in Dentistry should be borderless.
On this note, please find the link for the letter sent to all Members of Parliament on 29 November 2017 https://drive.google.com/...
The Malaysian Dental Association (MDA) council has also made wholehearted efforts to allay the fears and anxieties of members in the dental fraternity concerning the New Dental Bill 2017. Any limitation in the scope of practice in dentistry might reduce the accessibility of the general public to oral health care services especially in the underdeveloped areas. As such, we are pleased to acknowledge the current sentiment in the Ministry of Health that there shall be no restrictions and limitations in the practice of Dentistry. Rest assured that the MDA upholds the broad principle that the new bill be tailored in the best interest of the public, hence the best interests of the profession is always being jointly discussed with all relevant agencies.
The full document of the new bill was made available on 12 December 2017 and was then sent via email blast to all members of MDA for their feedback and comments. The MDA Council subsequently convened an Extraordinary General Meeting (EOGM) on 11 February 2018 in the MDA office at Kelana Jaya to adopt the following resolution: That the House resolves to reach a consensus on a Memorandum to the Dental Bill 2017 and approve it as the official position statement of the Malaysian Dental Association (MDA). https://drive.google.com/...
I would like to take the opportunity to urge all concerned members to come forward and contribute significantly in our efforts to work with all relevant stakeholders in any ways deemed appropriate, to ensure progress is made towards the tabling of the New Dental Bill.
Lastly, on behalf of the council, I would like to wish all our Chinese colleagues Gong Xi Fa Cai. May you have a blessed and blissful Chinese New Year.
