Everyone wants to make a good impression. However even more important than the right shoe and the right clothes, is the right smile. While people don't always notice what you're wearing, a bright smile and fresh breath make a great impression. Start by taking good care of your teeth now and they 'll look good for a lifetime. Even when shoes and clothes get out od style, your bright smile will still be in fashion.

Why is toothbrushing important?

To avoid plaque build up, it is important to thoroughly clean your teeth and gums at least twice a day. Everyday, a layer of sticky bacterial plaque forms constantly on the surfaces of teeth. In those areas where it is difficult to remove, such as between the teeth and along the gum line, plaque can accumulate and cause disease. Thorough brushing is essential, for only regular and thorough brushing will remove plaque.

Proper brushing takes at least two minutes

Thorough and daily brushing is important because few individuals completely remove plaque when they brush. Therefore it is extremely important for you to maximise cleaning your teeth. Daily brushing also provides an opportunity for you to use fluoride toothpaste more often to prevent the formation of new cavities.

How can I ensure that I remove plaque adequately?

By brushing all tooth surfaces as well as the gum twice daily. Remember, each tooth has five surfaces - a front, a back, two sides and a top. The only one sure way to prevent dental disease is to clean every surface.

The following instructions can be used as a guide :-

  • Begin by placing the bristles at a 45 degree angle to the gumline of your upper teeth. Gently jiggle the brush or move it in tiny circles over the tooth and gum. It is important to spend about 10 seconds on each tooth. Move the brush systematically around the mouth, brushing all outside and inside surfaces this way.
  • For the chewing surfaces, use a light back and forth motion.
  • Finally, for fresher breath, brush your tongue too.
  • Use a soft to medium bristled toothbrush.
  • Children should use a scrub technique as they do not have sufficient manual dexterity.
  • There are many brushing techniques, but the main principle is that after a brushing session, all the tooth surfaces should be clean. More emphasis on cleanliness matter than tooth brushing technique

What type of toothbrush is best?

There are many type of toothbrush available, all designed to help you remove plaque. However, they are not all equally efficient at removing plaque from those difficult to clean areas : i.e., along the gum line, between the teeth and at the back of the mouth. Using the toothbrush that's the right shape and size and has the correct type of bristles enables you to get the most out of brushing and to be more efficient at removing plaque from all tooth surfaces.

Replace your toothbrush often

Dental professionals recommend that you replace your toothbrush at least every 3 months. A toothbrush with worn, split, uneven or toothpaste-clogged bristle can't clean your teeth effectively. They are not effective in removing plaque from your teeth and gums. Worn out and shaggy bristles too may even harm your gums. After an illness, replacing your toothbrush helps prevent reinfection.

How often should you brush?

Ideally, you should brush after every meal, because the bacterial attack on teeth begins minutes after eating. At the very least, brush once a day and always before you to bed.

Rinse for added protection

Using mouthrinse everyday gives you extra protection in hard-to -reach places like between teeth and around braces. The swishing action also helps loosen trapped food particles. Using a pre-brushing rinse that contains antibacterial agent will help loosens the plaque that stick onto the tooth surfaces and also help to reduce the build-up of plaque between brushings.
